The name ØsterGRO might be hard to pronounce but it is not hard to become a part of!. The idea behind ØsterGRO is inspired by rooftop farms in the US and ØsterGRO was founded in 2014. The vision behind ØsterGro is to provide local and fresh vegetables, honey and eggs to people in the city, as well as inviting everyone to participate in the growing season from April to mid-December. Every Tuesday during the season people from all over the world join us for our weekly volunteer day and you are also welcome!
About ØsterGro
ØsterGro is the first rooftop farm in Denmark, established on top of the old car-auction house, Nellemannhuset, in the heart of Copenhagen's Climate Resilience Neighbourhood. ØsterGro covers 600 m2 with fields of organically grown vegetables, fruits, greens, herbs and edible flowers, a greenhouse, henhouse and three bee-hives. ØsterGro is organised as a community-supported agriculture (CSA) and sells its produce, in cooperation with the farm Stensbølgård to 40 members. The members pay in advance of the harvest season for a weekly share of the harvest.
ØsterGro is not only for the members and volunteers who participate in the project. It is a green breathing space for the whole city! With our restaurant Gro Spiseri we want to invite even more people up in our green surroundings creating unique dining experiences for our guests. During the year, you can enjoy seasonal breakfasts, lunches and dinners around the long table in the greenhouse, as well as the many other events, such as Wine bar, Spring and Christmas markets

Enjoy a unique dining experience at Gro Spiseri where we serve the best of the season in the beautiful surroundings of the farm. All is organic and from local producers.
We only use the best local ingredients from local farmers, low impact fishermen, cattle-, pig- and poultry farms. Everything is 100% organic. Even though the majority of our rooftop’s crops are shared amongst the members, our team utilises most of the flowers, herbs, and honey from the farm.
The meal will be served communal style, in our idyllic greenhouse. The grand wooden table seats up to 25 people at a time. Upon arrival everyone can enjoy a drink at the rooftop, get to know our chickens and roam around before seated together. We love the feeling of dining with family, and therefore we seat everyone at once and start the dinner at the same time for everyone.
Join ØsterGro: Become a volunteer
We can always use an extra hand on the roof. From April to mid-December you can join us every Tuesday from 10 am to 5 pm. We are often a group of 20-25 people, and our volunteers are from all over the world.
We do all kinds of work in the field and it is not required to have previous experience in farming or gardening. As long as you do not mind getting dirt on your hands, you are welcome to join our volunteer days, and we also offer a delicious vegetarian lunch which we enjoy together. Sounds like fun? Throughout the season ØsterGRO delivers greens once a week to 40 member families. At the moment the waiting list is very long but if you live in Copenhagen permanently or plan to stay a few years we would love to have you as a member:) Sign up for the waiting list by filling out the formular below.
